Life Rites worked with the MMP teams; Cemetery and Crematoria NSW; ACC Higgins, who modified the shroud bearer design; as well as Natural Grace Funeral Directors, who had already established shrouded cremation in Victoria, and who generously shared their knowledge. Together we offered this as a legitimate and genuine choice for families in the Sydney Metropolitan Area and hopefully, in 2026, throughout NSW. The families that have chosen this were all so deeply moved and heartened by the beautifully shrouded form of their person and the capacity to be close to them during the service. We too have noticed how humanising and intimate the form of a beautifully shrouded person is, adorned with flowers. During the 2020 lockdown, Sonja Godfrey-Chan from our team found a quiet but powerful way to honour her own family’s connection to this legacy. She taught herself to crochet poppies, preparing three glass vases to remember her grandfather (WWII), her great-grandfather (WWI, who died post-war of his injuries), and her great-uncle (WWI, who died on the fields of France). When dawn broke on 25 April, she stood with her neighbours at the end of her driveway, listening to the Last Post play across their quiet street. Sonja shares, "I have always held those who have fought for us close to my heart. I now have the privilege in my work with Life Rites to assist families of veterans by including a RSL-endorsed Military Funeral Tribute in their ceremonies, a chance to honour their contribution to our country, to place the poppy flower, that widely recognised symbol of remembrance, on the coffin, and to reflect on the timeless words of the Ode of Remembrance." At Life Rites, we recognise how important it is to acknowledge the service and sacrifice of veterans and service personnel, not only on ANZAC Day, but whenever we are called to honour a life that has helped shape our collective story. This beautifully restored landmark venue has allowed people to come to a funeral of their person, spend time in ceremony and then stay in the same venue for a catered wake, sometime, with the coffin present for the wake, has been an extremely healing and valuable experience. As this deeply personal choice becomes more accessible, we have worked to improve our understanding, literacy, and care practices to ensure compassionate support for individuals and their family during this profound time. And within the broader community. Each experience has deepened our appreciation for the courage and thoughtfulness behind such decisions, allowing us to develop specialised services both to the person choosing VAD and those who love them. We remain committed to offering a safe space, guidance, and respect for all families as they honour their people with dignity and grace. Australia and NSW have some of the strictest guidelines for eligibility of VAD and community attitudes, feelings and understanding have continued to grow and develop over the year that it has been available. We thank the VAD Dr’s, nurses, pharmacists, witnesses and volunteers for all you do as families and communities navigate this offering within our end of life choices. Her terminal illness had taken so much, and accessing VAD gave her autonomy over her own body when she needed that the most.
