Funeral Costs

What does a funeral cost in Sydney?

Funeral costs in Sydney may vary widely, and we understand how overwhelming it may feel to compare options during a time of grief. This page is designed to offer clarity, transparency, and gentle guidance — reflecting our belief that every family deserves to understand their choices without pressure.

If you’re researching funeral costs in Sydney for the first time, it may help to know that the largest variables are usually the cremation or burial fees, the coffin or shroud selection, the ceremony venue, and whether you’d like to include viewings, rituals, or personalised elements. Our sample packages below offer a realistic picture of what families typically choose, while remaining fully customisable.

Every person in our care receives gentle, holistic support from our team, including Essential Body Care as standard — a key difference compared to many traditional models. This ensures your loved one is treated with dignity, tenderness, and respect throughout each step of the process.

*Rates for genuine hardship can be negotiated on a case by case basis, don’t hesitate to call.

At Life Rites Funerals, pricing is shaped by your preferences and the cultural or ceremonial elements important to your family. Because every person and every story is unique, we take the time to explain how each cost is structured and what it contributes to your loved one’s care.

To aid our model of pricing transparency, and as regulated by Fair Trading, please see the following sample packages and costs that may be incurred in after death care and funeral services, pending your decisions.

We offer all our people a 15 minute no obligation consultation by phone, after which we can issue you a bespoke itemised quote that is tailored to your needs and budget.

Direct Cremation

No Service No Attendance or Direct Cremation is often chosen by families seeking a simple, intimate, and practical option, especially when planning a separate memorial at a later date. While direct cremations elsewhere may be minimal, at Life Rites this option still includes our dedicated Essential Body Care and on-site mortuary support — offering you the reassurance that your person is thoughtfully tended to from the moment they arrive with us.

Some families also choose a small viewing or quiet time in our Hurstville chapel before the cremation. This may provide space for reflection, ritual, or gentle connection for those who need it.

The Life Rites difference means that the beautiful Essential Body Care that we give all of our people - which involves respectful and gentle washing, dressing and coffining by two of our dedicated staff at our onsite mortuary - is included. This, along with every other step throughout from all of our team members, means that personhood and story is maintained and your person will never be treated as an anonymous number.

Adding a facilitated dressing, a viewing or a ‘being with’ in our lovely onsite chapel is also possible, along with any other item in our full list of itemised costs. Another possibility that many take up is working with Life Rites to create a separate Memorial Service at a later date, made all the more meaningful when we have been the same team that cared for your person in the first instance.

Service with Cremation or Burial

These sample costings reflect the most commonly chosen funeral pathways in Sydney — a traditional or secular ceremony followed by cremation or burial. Many families choose this structure when looking for a meaningful, community-centred farewell with personal touches woven into the ceremony.

Life Rites Funerals draws on extensive experience in secular, inter-faith, cultural, LGBTQIA+, family-led, and green funerals. This allows us to tailor the ceremony to your family’s values, beliefs, and story while keeping the pricing as clear and predictable as possible.

Our Pricing Transparency Policy

Understanding What Influences Funeral Costs

Funeral costs are shaped by a combination of practical, ceremonial, and personal elements. These may include:

  • The level of mortuary care you choose

  • Coffin, casket, or shroud selection

  • Cremation vs burial fees (determined by your chosen crematorium or cemetery)

  • Ceremony location — on-site chapel, crematorium chapel, church, or community venue

  • Celebrant services and ceremony design

  • Floral choices, visual tributes, or printed materials

  • Cultural or faith-aligned rituals

  • Transport (hearse, transfer, additional vehicles)

We explain each of these elements during your consultation so you feel informed, supported, and in control.

Arranging a funeral is not like buying a simple product and some decisions may need to happen quickly, whilst being in a vulnerable state. For this reason we have a clear and transparent pricing policy.

We show you the raw cost price of each item, and then apply a Company Fee that is based on 40% of these costs. When preparing the final invoice, each item is confirmed against actual costs and if this is less than was quoted, we invoice you less.

We are a small, independent team who work at an authentically human scale with great quality and depth, in our own bricks and mortar premises. Accordingly, our Company Fee sustains our team overheads and our beloved premises including chapel and onsite mortuary care.

Pre-Planning, Pre-Paid Funerals and Funeral Bonds

Transparency is central to our philosophy. You will always receive a fully itemised quote, including all raw costs, clearly separated from our Company Fee. This structure reflects our commitment to honest pricing, ethical care, and accessible decision-making — especially during times when clarity is needed most.

If you have cultural, spiritual, or family-led preferences that influence what is included, we adjust your quote to reflect only what you truly need. There are no “packages that force inclusions”; each funeral is designed individually.

Pre-Planning a funeral can be done by anyone at any time. This involves an hour and a half meeting with a Life Rites funeral director, in person or on Zoom. In this conversation we will speak to your questions and requests around funeral rites and share ideas on what is possible. From this we will furnish you with a sample quote so you have a sense of what is entailed, ready for when you need it.

Cost, including provision of quote: $165.00; deductible from your final fee, should you use our service in the future.

A Pre-Paid Funeral or Funeral Bond can also be arranged by anyone at any time. We partner with Funeral Plan Management to provide both.

If you’re unsure where to begin or what type of service aligns with your family’s needs, we are here to help with clarity and compassion. Whether you require a simple direct cremation, a traditional funeral, a personalised home vigil, or something unique to your cultural or spiritual tradition, we explain each option and its associated cost respectfully and transparently.

You may contact us anytime to request a detailed, itemised quote or to speak with a funeral director about the choices available to you.
